I arrived in Seattle where I have friends

I arrived in Seattle where I have friends, Keiko and Chris, after getting on the Greyhound that night and 28 hours and five hundred million trees later.   After spending a beer-driven day running around hills and woods the next morning flew to Austin, and I met my friend Anne and had a drunken evening in Irish bars and up skyscrapers. We went, the next morning upstate to the first Wendy wedding,Wendy number one and Anne, I know from my time in the Philippines, they were in the Peace Corps, whose stated mission of promoting American values overseas was attained principally by drinking lots of bad beer and hanging out in packs in a state of loud sexual agitation. I’ve always felt a special bond with Wendy, we’d even become physically entangled once. I had never met the groom to be, but had heard from all and sundry that Nick was great, and good for Wendy. I did not dwell on the fact that it’s always a bit sticky meeting the groom of an old flame at their wedding, though I did wonder how he might feel about me being there. After saying hello and congratulations I went to the riverside reception. It was all ticking along nicely until they cut the cake, and I got my first chance to have a chat, but Nick kept being interrupted by requests for photos. I could see it was bothering him, and I said just go with it, it’s like being Brad Pitt for a day. To the dance floor the couple went, and did their first dance,it was a traditional austin dance. There’s a big commotion ten minutes later,a group of people around some guy in a tuxedo on the ground. Oh shit, I said to myself, it’s all been too much for one of the old fellers, he’s popping his clogs, so I dive in. All that first aid teaching I’ve done comes good.
