Some education authorities take the teaching of handcrafts very seriously because they see such classes as an opportunity to help a student, not merely to learn how to make certain objects, but to develop as a person. The final product of a handcraft lesson is viewed as secondary to the development of initiative, resourcefulness, flexibility, adaptability and creativity, as well as tolerance, understanding and cooperation in group activities. Handcrafting can bring a good sense of achievement and a feeling of being generative in the use of ones hands. Since the everyday work of most people now may be routine, it cannot help develop the creativity and talents of the person; this is the reason why a lot of them look for outlets. Handcrafting can be also be a source of decorative and practical items for the homes. A handmade gift trim to the personality or needs of the recipient can reflect much love and concern on the part of the giver. Since it is a form of refreshment, handcrafting can also serve for recreation of body and mind, which is necessitated by all. Many prefer using some time in constructive crafts instead of sitting passively in front of a television set. One kind of handcrafting activity is spinning which has been very famous these days. A spinning wheel ready to assemble can be purchased inexpensively; and handcraft stores make throws and blankets available. Other sources of fleece are country graziers and shearing demonstrations at schools. If one is too busy to dye his own, he can purchase colored blankets that can be acquired. However, dyeing in itself is another interesting project, and much information is available on using natural vegetable dyes, onion skins, walnut shells, and so forth. Fibers can be also used in spinning. One individual spun some yarn even from the hair of a Pekingese dog at the request of the dogs owner!
